Inspection frequency

The employer’s obligation to carry out periodic inspections under D.P.R. 462/01 is laid down not only by that decree but also by the Consolidated Law on health and safety at work (Legislative Decree 81/08 arts. 80, 87, 296-7).

In particular the inspection frequency is established by D.P.R. 462/01 itself:

Art. 4: “ Il datore di lavoro è tenuto ad effettuare regolari manutenzioni dell'impianto, nonché a far sottoporre lo stesso a verifica periodica ogni cinque anni, ad esclusione di quelli installati in cantieri , in locali adibiti ad uso medico e negli ambienti a maggior rischio in caso di incendio per i quali la periodicità è biennale .”

Art. 6 Installations in places with an explosion hazard: “ Il datore di lavoro è tenuto ad effettuare regolari manutenzioni dell'impianto, nonché a far sottoporre lo stesso a verifica periodica ogni due anni ."

What should be done where, in a single workplace, some environments require a biennial inspection and others a five-yearly inspection?

On this point, CEI Guide 0-14 primarily recommends carrying out the inspection every two years for the entire installation, provided that the premises requiring a biennial frequency are those with the prevailing area and activity.

The same guide also allows inspections at different frequencies (every two years in the biennial environment and every five years in the five-yearly environment) but only when “ i luoghi e le attività che comportano verifiche biennali sono isolate o compartimentate in maniera che i rischi provenienti da questi ambienti restino confinati in questi luoghi e non si possano estendere agli altri e/ o quando gli ambienti da sottoporre a verifica biennale riguardino soltanto ambienti o attività secondarie o residue".
